Without patent protection, the Caille Brothers Co. and the Watling Manufacturing Co. were able to make identical copies of the Mills Bell slot. | Charles Fey would not sell his Liberty Bell machine, but preferred to operate them. Around 1905 a Fey Liberty Bell slot was stolen from a San Francisco saloon. The only two things missing were the machine and a towel used to hide the theft. |

Were did the fruit symbol come from?In 1910 Mills Novelty introduced the Liberty Bell Gum Fruit model, top left, using the fruit symbols (above) which dispensed a package of gum with each play.This allowed the slot to be classified as a vending machine, thus circumventing the law. |
