 This plaque was placed by E Clampus Vitus in 1980 at the site of Fey's 406 Market Street factory. Three years later an official California State Plaque Landmark, No. 937, replaced the original marker. The article below appeared in a popular trade magazine in 1937. It was written by Walter Tratsch, a large Chicago manufacturer of amusement machines

Clandestine Erection 
On a Tuesday evening in 1980 Noble Grand Humbugs of E Clampus Vitus, dressed as laborers, are placing the Fey monument on Market Street in downtown San Francisco. The clamper plaque was replaced three years later with an official state marker and designated as California Historical Landmark #937.

The clampers, a resurrected Gold Rush fraternal organization dedicated to history and revelry in equal parts, erects markers at historical sites throughout the old west.

The entire Fey family posed for this photo right after the installaton of the Charles Fey state marker was finished. In the front center is Edmund Fey, Sr. who, as a boy, helped hs father work in the famous 406 Market Street factory.
