Introduction
Unparalleled in world history is the explosion of inventions during the American Industrial Revolution, 1875-1900. One of these many creations that was wholly American in origin was the slot machine.

 The Cigar Store Klondike is Alive
By the beginning of the 1890s slot machines had spread throughout most of the nation, especially in San Francisco. A local paper dated July 10, 1893 stated there were 1,500 slots operating in the city. The majority were poker machines operated in 500 locations. Most of these were in cigar stands - only there for the operation of machines. The slots became so profitable that the San Francisco ran this political cartoon in the late 1890s..
